The Construction of Fear. Lecture by Antoni Muntadas. 28.11.2022
On the 28th of November 2022 at 7pm, the Fondazione Baruchello presents the lecture The Construction of Fear, given by artist Antoni Muntadas on the occasion of the screening of the film On translation: Fear/Miedo, as part of the exhibition “Aprire la storia”.
The film combines interviews with people who experience the tensions of the U.S.-Mexico border area on a daily basis, as well as archival television footage that references the concept of fear, and other journalistic material. On translation: Fear/Miedo investigates how fear exists for people on both sides of the border as a cultural/sociological construction, which is ultimately influenced and generated by politics and economics.
This meeting makes up part of the exhibition “Aprire la storia” and is linked to a new exhibit and a new phase of the project.
“Aprire la storia” is an exhibition that intends to reflect on the adjacencies between the universe of mass media communication as proposed by a daily newspaper, and the perspective that artists of different backgrounds and training have dedicated to history. The project stems from the paper archive of daily newspaper “la Repubblica”, which became part of the Foundation in 2009; loose and bound copies, front pages, and details of the newspaper tell the story of an era that extends from 1976 to the present.
The enormous archive of a newspaper (from the first issue in 1976 to 2010 and then, through a selection, to the present day) set up in the spaces of Fondazione Baruchello, presents the course of history in the fragmentary and immediate nature of journalistic communication; the films, in a dedicated projection space, constitute the opening of a perspective that, with different points of view, problematize the same facts, opening up new ways of reading history.
