L’ARCHIVIO E LA STORIA. UNA RELAZIONE NON LINEARE

Conference organised by Carla Subrizi

31 March 2023

The conference entitled L’Archivio e la storia. Una relazione non lineare, curated by Carla Subrizi and conceived together with Gianfranco Baruchello, is intended to be an opportunity for discussion and debate on the concept of the archive itself, focusing on the ways in which this term and its relationship with history and art history in particular are currently being discussed. A non-linear relationship, curated by Carla Subrizi and conceived together with Gianfranco Baruchello, is intended to be an opportunity for discussion and debate on the concept of the archive itself, focusing on the ways in which this term and its relationship with history and art history in particular are currently being rethought. The archive is seen in this case not only as a simple place of preservation but as a starting point for studying and reactivating what is collected in it.
The aim of the day is to ask some questions and to try if not to find exhaustive answers to these questions: “is the archive the source of history or the problematic terrain of multiple readings of history? How does today’s impulse to understand “archives” in museum collections problematise the theoretical premise that Hal Foster in 2004 called “An Archival Impulse”? The aim of the conference is to reflect on the theoretical and methodological premises underlying the presentation and consultation of archival documents, in order to understand, in the final analysis, how the identification of unpublished materials, alongside the better-known ones, can open up new perspectives for research, study and reinterpretation of art history” (from the Foreword to the Conference by Carla Subrizi).
The Conference is divided into two sections and presents papers that consider theoretical and research perspectives, exhibition methodologies, and case studies referring to artists’ archives.
